Course Prerequisites

Course Prerequisites provide the ability to define and enforce prerequisite rules that control the availability of courses a student may request. Using a multitude of options such as percent grade, letter grade, credit hours, concurrent request, and teacher recommendation can build a comprehensive rule to help students request courses for which they are academically prepared to be successful.

    Teacher Recommendations

    Some courses may require a current teacher’s recommendation prior to the student submitting course requests. Administrative staff members can create, edit and delete recommendations using Request Management in PowerSchool.

    Preparing for Student Course Request Entry

    PowerScheduler is designed to enable entry of course requests by students through the student/parent portal. The design and management of student course request entry are functions within PowerScheduler. Grade specific course request screens contain separate check boxes to enable access to the registration screen for parents and students, and administrative staff.

    Student Course Request Entry

    Students, parents, and/or administrative staff members enter course requests in a combination of several ways.

  • Students enter course requests in PowerSchool’s Student and Parent Portals

  • Administrative staff enters course requests for individual students using the Modify Future Requests student page in PowerSchool

  • Scheduling staff enters course requests for individual students using the Requests page in PowerScheduler.

  • Scheduling staff enters course requests for groups of students using the Mass Add Request Student Scheduling Function in PowerScheduler.

    Prepare to Build: Part 2

    Managing the scheduling process for a school is complex. The Prepare to Build process is designed for schools that will build a new master schedule and load student requests into the new schedule.

    Build a Master Schedule

    The PowerScheduler Build process is designed for schools that have not previously built a master schedule in PowerScheduler or have significant changes in the schedule structure and/or schedule resources. PowerScheduler Build process will build a master schedule from entered parameters, preferences and resources then load student requests into the new master schedule.

    Load Student Requests

    PowerScheduler Load Process is designed for schools that already have a master schedule and only need to load student requests into the master schedule.

    Adjust Student Schedules

    Some student scheduling work will continue after successful Build and Load processes. The post-build and load scheduling work will continue in PowerScheduler until just before End of Year process.

    Commit Scheduling Work

    PowerScheduler Master Schedule and student scheduling work must be committed after the current academic year has ended and before End of Year process.
